The Moulin Rouge of Paris has been a symbol of the city since 1889, beginning as a popular cabaret and dance hall, becoming a music hall in the Roaring Twenties, and then a theatre.

But Satine has been promised to the Duke (James Bryers) in a deal the nightclub's manager Harold Zidler (Simon Burke AO) expects to fund his cabaret. Who is James Bryers? That's a good question, one that I think grows and evolves all the time. BUT I'd say James Bryers is a son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend. James Bryers is imposing and menacing as his affluent, entitled adversary (the villain in the piece). Simon Burke is all about affectations, bringing swagger to his portrayal of the Moulin Rouge mover and shaker. I was particularly taken by the nuances in character that Bert LaBonté brought to Toulouse-Lautrec. He was a standout to me.
